Artist Statement
Ellie Chung investigates the abstract and intuitive relationship between mental and physical emotional phenomena in her pieces. Chung utilizes personal and anecdotal experiences of emotions to guide her process, creating a conversation between artist and viewer to explore each person’s unique experience with their emotions.
Suffocation is her physical piece, a portrayal of frustration and suffocation stemming from deep in the chest, stifling breathing and speech. This piece represents a wish of cathartic release from the heavy feeling that weighs on the chest in times of stress, sadness, or frustration. This physical feeling is rooted in many emotions and allows the viewer to interpret the emotion based on what they personally feel in their suffocating moments.
